Discover the Skills That Built Sinai Park House

Learn about the traditional building skills and craftmanship that created Burton’s oldest building, Sinai Park House, when we open our gates on Friday 12th September for Heritage Open Days. From the Romans, Medieval monks and English Civil War armies to English aristocracy – all have left their mark on Sinai and the surrounding land.

Come and see demonstrations of the skills used to create this unique building, with an opportunity to have a go at stone masonry, wattle and daub and traditional brick bonds. Due to active restoration work in 2025, this is one of only a handful of dates this year that Sinai will be open to the public, so take this opportunity to discover more about this ancient retreat, once owned by the Burton Monks. See the healing springs and Chalybeate waters of the Lord’s Well and walk on a Scheduled Monument – Sinai’s moat!

Join one of the three timed tours during the day and learn about the ongoing project to restore Sinai for future generations to experience. Learn about the interesting characters that once occupied Sinai and see its medieval stone foundations. Tours start at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm (pre-booking required for tour only). Please arrive promptly for your tour as access to the site must be supervised at all times given the risks associated with the derelict part of the building. Bring a picnic – there’s plenty of space for blankets and chairs. Refreshments available in support of the Friends of Sinai Park House Trust.

Accessibility details
Visitors to Sinai should park locally in Shobnall, wherever it is safe and legal, and walk up via the national forest footpath, approx. 10-minute walk, which is opposite Shobnall Primary school. When you reach the gate, go over the style on the left and take the grassy path up on the left. Follow the woodland trail until you see the sign directing your to Sinai on your right.
If mobility impaired, please email kate@sinaiparkhouse.co.uk in advance to arrange suitable parking at Sinai. Please note that this route goes up hill and the terrain is uneven. There is also a style and kissing gate
