Coach House College Collaboration Attracts Special Visitor!

We were delighted to welcome MP for Burton and Uttoxeter, Jacob Collier up to Sinai in October where he met with BSDC construction students and watched their hard work on Sinai’s Coach House restoration project.

As the students worked on the next step (quite literally!) of the project – building a new entrance access ramp, Mr Collier had the opportunity to chat with BSDC Carpentry and Joinery Lecturer, Ian Vanes-Jones, who shared details of the work carried out by students to turn the coach house into an office for the Sinai Park House Trust.

Great conversations were had about the brilliant work achieved by the students, the hugely successful collaboration with BSDC and the importance of skills-based learning, which the college, Sinai and Ian are passionate about.

Over the last year and a half, the students have gained invaluable hands-on experience of a live historical restoration – undertaking brickwork, joinery, electrical and plumbing work.  You name it, they’ve tackled it!  Roofing, repointing, decorating, external and internal plumbing work, installing a fireplace, lighting, electrics and more!

Ian comments: “The work our students have carried out on this project will help to preserve the coach house’s historical integrity while meeting contemporary standards. Working on the restoration of Sinai Park House's coach house not only preserves a piece of Burton's history but also provides an invaluable educational opportunity for the construction students at BSDC.”

Mr Collier then went on to take a tour of Sinai and its grounds to learn more about its history and future plans for the site.

Mr Collier commented: “Sinai Park House really is a hidden gem. I want to support the Trust’s efforts to revitalise this site and showcase its rich local history. It’s inspiring to see college students actively involved in a community project, applying their skills in real-world settings that enhance both their education and future careers. Expanding opportunities like this for young people is vital, allowing them to put learning into practice.”

The project has not only created a successful collaboration with BSDC but has also gained support from businesses both locally and nationally including St. Modwen Homes. QEP and the Harlow Timber Group, along with generous contributions from other building and DIY brands including Luceco plc, Burg-Wachter and V33.

Burton’s rich history was also discussed with passion and the collective heritage potential of the region highlighted.  Kate Murphy, custodian for the Sinai Park House Trust added, “We’re delighted BSDC construction students have got involved with the project yet again. This project has offered a rich learning ground for students and it's wonderful to see the community coming together to support such an important endeavour. Sinai has huge heritage potential for Burton and it’s vital we restore full access, usage and enjoyment. We thank Mr Collier for taking the time to visit and hope to welcome him back in the future.”
